Issues of lead in our drinking water are becoming the new normal. In fact, USA TODAY Network journalists recently revealed the results of a year-long investigation which found up to four million Americans could be drinking toxic water and never know.

In 2015, more than 16 million people experienced waterborne illness due to contaminated drinking water, with excessive lead levels reported in almost 2,000 water systems in the United States. From the ongoing crisis in Flint, Michigan to reports of high levels of lead found in hundreds of school and public drinking fountains, the cleanliness of our nation’s water supply is of high concern for Americans across the country.

A recent survey conducted by the Water Quality Association found:

  • Forty-one percent of respondents said their drinking water is not as safe as it should be
  • Forty-six percent of respondents perceive the federal laws governing drinking water quality are not strict enough
  • The top three perceived tap water contaminants among homeowners, which include lead, chlorine and microbiologicals

In this interview, Water Quality Association Executive Director Pauli Undesser can talk about the journey of water through our nation’s aging water infrastructure – one that potentially allows thousands of contaminants to enter into our home drinking water.

She will be joined by PUR Brand Manager, Amy Shanahan, who can discuss ways for Americans to protect their health on a daily basis with the use of a certified water filtration system. She will also unveil a new website that allows consumers to check their own local water quality based on their home address.
